5 signs your AC is about to die — and what replacement actually costs

1. Your energy bills are climbing with no explanation

If your Alabama Power bill went up 20–30% compared to the same month last year and you haven't changed your habits, your AC is working harder to do less. A declining compressor draws more power as it loses capacity. Pull up your bill history and compare July-to-July — that trend line tells you more than any sales pitch.

2. Repairs are getting more frequent

One repair every few years is normal. Two repairs in one summer is a pattern. Three means the system is telling you something. Add up what you've spent on repairs in the last two years — if it's more than half the cost of a new system, the math favors replacement.

3. It short-cycles — on and off every few minutes

The compressor kicks on, runs for five minutes, shuts off, then starts again. This stresses the compressor, the contactor, and the capacitor — the three most expensive parts to replace. Age alone isn't a reason to replace — but age plus any of the signs above is.
